The NSW Branch of the Economic Society of Australia is one of the oldest professional associations in Australia with a rich history of activities since it was formed in 1925. The aims of the Society are to:
- encourage informed public debate on important economic issues
- promote the teaching and study of economics and its application in Australia
- assist in the training and professional development of economists
- co-operate with other Branches and the Central Council in the general work of the Society.
The Society hosts monthly lunchtime seminars at the Reserve Bank of Australia with a range of informed speakers providing opportunities to contribute to important economic, political and social issues in Australia and overseas. The new evening February seminar on New Directions in Economic Policy provided a free evening event for members.
The new Honours Prize is based on the thesis in order to recognise university students’ research potential for a future PhD. In cooperation with the NSW Office of the Board of Studies, the Society now offers ten HSC Economics scholarships to encourage the top students in NSW to continue studying economics.
Workshops on panel data estimation, cost-benefit analysis and DSGE modeling have been successfully run in the last year to assist the professional development of practising economists. The exciting Emerging Economists Program also aims to mentor younger economists with talks by established experts and to provide the opportunity to network with other up-and-coming economists.
The Society will be hosting the Australian Conference of Economists in 2010. This is the premier economics conference in Australia and will feature contemporary themes and distinguished international speakers.
Details of future events and other matters of interest to economists are available in our monthly Newsletter for September 2008. The Society now has a flexible membership scheme whereby you can join online at any time.
We have a regular advertisements for jobs for economists on our website.
