About Our Society

Anyone interested in contemporary economic issues and debates is invited to join the ACT branch of the Economic Society of Australia. No special qualifications are required for membership, simply an interest in economic issues! Student members are eligible for discounted membership rates.

What We Do

The Economic Society of Australia aims to

  • nurture informed debate of topical public policy issues
  • foster learning and networking opportunities for both budding and established economists
  • advance the standing of economists in policy formation, improve the teaching of economics, its understanding by the public, and its reporting by the media.

The Canberra Branch is one of the larger branches of the Economic Society, boasting a membership of 280+ members across a variety of sectors including the public service, academia, the corporate sector and NGOs.

The Branch has an active events program, and Members enjoy up to eight free seminars each year. Over the past year prominent economists – including Glenn Withers, Steve Dowrick and Andrew Leigh - have spoken on topics ranging over competition policy, innovation policy, higher education, Medicare reform and the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. Most recently, the society hosted a public forum by Dr. John Edwards and Professor Tony Makin on the federal government’s $42B fiscal stimulus.

Branch events are catered for, and always present useful networking opportunities for members.

Members can also look forward to the Canberra branch hosting the much anticipated 2011 Conference of Economists.

The Branch’s newly formed Young Economist Network strives to initiate and build a mutually beneficial platform for young economists to exchange ideas with established economists. The Branch also hosts, at the beginning of most years, a welcome function for economics and commerce graduates -  newly arrived in Canberra.
